Long after the business day is over and many are preparing to sleep, parking lot sweepers are just getting started. Many don’t even know this service exists and most don’t understand its purpose; yet, these specialized machines run every night of the year. While most would presume that a parking lot sweeper’s job is to collect litter, it would only be a partial-truth.

American’s are passionate about water quality. Water is contaminated from both point-source and non-point-source pollution. Runoff from rooftops and paved surfaces contains non-point-source pollutants consisting of any contaminants whose source cannot be directly identified. In the case of runoff from parking lots and other impervious surfaces, this pollution may be from hydrocarbons (oils) that leaked from vehicles, landscape chemicals, tire and brake residue, organics from trees and landscaping, and of course litter. The objective of sweeping is to collect these pollutants and keep them from entering our bays, rivers, and aquifers. Parking lot sweeping is a best management practice and is more cost effective for removing contaminates than any remedial technology. Next time you see a sweeper, give him a thumbs up because your next glass of water may be cleaner as a result of his work!

The community derives its strength from the contributions of the many.

PLANET Day Of Service 2010

Common Area Solutions believes its success as a business is directly correlated with the strength of the community. CAS is coordinating and donating materials, manpower, and equipment to the enhancement and expansion of the Hollice T Williams Community Garden in Pensacola, FL. The current raised bed array has been a huge success in providing fertile green space for expert and aspiring gardeners as well as a medium for instruction. Demand has exceed the amount of space available in the beds so CAS is working with the City of Pensacola’s Neighborhood Services department to provide more gardens. As part of the addition, some of the beds and access paths will be made ADA accessible.

CAS invites volunteers and supporters to donate time, in kind donations, and to spread enthusiasm for the April 20th event.

Common Area Solutions makes use of the lowest emission small engine powered equipment available today. Our blowers, trimmers, and edgers all use Stihl 4 Mix technology, which combines the clean burning efficiency of a four stroke engine with the power to weight ratio of a two stroke engine.

To further enhance the performance, longevity, and clean burning nature of our small engines, CAS utilizes Opti 2 two stroke oil. ”Opti-2?s smoke reduction, and gasohol compatibility contribute to cleaner air, while up to 60% less oil is required, which helps conserve a precious non-renewable resource.”

The big deal here is that we use less than half the oil in our two stroke mix…less oil burned.
